FAI Rules and What You Can (and Can't) Do at Villa del Balbianello
Villa del Balbianello is owned and managed by FAI, the Italian National Trust. Heritage protection shapes everything about how weddings can be held on the property. For couples in the planning phase, knowing the rules in advance is more useful than discovering them mid-process.
This guide summarizes the operating principles. Specific applications are confirmed with FAI through the planner during booking.
Why FAI Sets Heritage Rules
FAI is the Italian equivalent of the National Trust in the United Kingdom. Its mandate is to protect and preserve significant Italian cultural and natural heritage sites. Villa del Balbianello, bequeathed to FAI by Guido Monzino in 1988, is one of its flagship properties.
The rules at the villa are designed to allow weddings while protecting the building, the gardens, and the public's continuing access to the heritage site. They are practical rather than restrictive. Couples who understand them up front can plan a beautiful wedding within them without friction.
Importantly, the rules are not arbitrary. Every restriction has a heritage rationale, and FAI's property liaison is available during planning to explain why specific decisions exist.
What Is Allowed: Decor, Music, and Lighting
Many things are allowed at Villa del Balbianello with planning. Floral arrangements are permitted, with placement guidance from FAI to protect garden plantings and architectural surfaces. Standard ceremony decor including chairs, an arch, and small altar arrangements is allowed.
Live music is allowed at appropriate volumes. String quartets, harpists, and small acoustic ensembles are the most common, fitting the property's character. Amplified music for dancing is not typically held on the property because the dinner reception is elsewhere.
Lighting that does not damage or attach to architectural surfaces is allowed. Free-standing candles, lanterns, and discreet ambient lighting work well. Mounted lighting and uplighting on the loggia require approval.
Drone videography is allowed with advance permit coordination through the planner. Photography is allowed throughout, with consideration for public visitors during open hours.
What Is Not Allowed: Structural Changes and Catered Dinners
Several activities are not permitted. Catered dinner receptions are the most significant. The dinner portion of a Balbianello wedding is held at a partner venue. Aperitif gatherings with passed canapés are allowed on the property for 60 to 90 minutes after the ceremony.
Structural modifications to the building are not allowed. Decor that attaches to walls, columns, or architectural surfaces is restricted. Florals are placed free-standing rather than mounted.
Confetti and rice are not allowed in the gardens. Petals, when used, must be biodegradable and confined to specific approved areas.
Large temporary structures, marquees, and tent installations are not permitted. The covered loggia provides natural rain shelter for the ceremony, which removes the need for additional structures.
Public access during property opening hours means weddings are scheduled to begin after public hours typically conclude.
