Ceremony Locations Inside Villa del Balbianello
Villa del Balbianello offers more than one ceremony location, and the choice between them affects guest experience, photography, video, and timing. Couples often arrive at the planning process assuming the loggia is the only option. In practice, there are three distinct spaces inside the property where civil ceremonies can be held, each with its own character.
This guide walks through all three.
The Loggia: The Iconic Ceremony Setting
The main loggia terrace is the iconic ceremony setting at Villa del Balbianello. The three-arched eastern face of the loggia opens onto the lake, and ceremonies held here use the loggia opening as a natural altar with the lake stretching behind the couple. This is the location most couples picture when they think of a Balbianello wedding.
Capacity at the loggia for a ceremony is typically up to 80 guests seated, with the ceremony chairs arranged in two rows facing the loggia opening. Sightlines are excellent, the stone architecture provides natural framing for video and photography, and the lake reflects soft light back into the ceremony from the eastern side.
Timing matters at the loggia. Late afternoon ceremonies positioned to end at golden hour produce the strongest visual results.
The Garden Terrace: A More Intimate Alternative
The upper garden terrace, above the loggia, offers a more intimate ceremony location with a different aesthetic. Surrounded by century-old cedar and plane trees, the terrace feels enclosed and quieter than the loggia. Guest sightlines lean toward the trees and the upper garden rather than the open lake.
For couples planning a smaller wedding (typically 20 to 50 guests), the upper terrace can feel more proportionate than the larger loggia setting. It also offers better midday shade if the ceremony must happen earlier in the day. The trade-off is that the lake itself is not visible from the upper terrace, which removes the iconic backdrop.
The garden terrace is occasionally used for first looks and pre-ceremony portraits even when the main ceremony is held at the loggia.
The Lakeside Steps: A Smaller Civil Ceremony Option
The lakeside steps, where guests typically arrive by boat from Lenno, can also host very small civil ceremonies of around 20 guests or fewer. The setting feels less formal than either the loggia or the garden terrace, with the lake immediately at the couple's feet and the loggia rising above as a backdrop.
Practically, this option works for elopements and very intimate weddings rather than larger celebrations. It is the most visually distinctive of the three locations, but the most logistically constrained for guest seating and weather contingency.
For couples interested in this option, the planner can discuss feasibility with FAI during the booking process.
